Looking For A Way Around Kentucky Bounty Hunting Laws
- Mary
Louisville, Kentucky
I am interested in a career in bounty hunting, but I am unsure of the channels to follow in getting started in the industry.

- Mary,
-
- Kentucky abolished the commercial bail bond industry several years ago and
along with it, outlawed bounty hunting in your state as well. So- there are
no clients and it is illegal since there is no provision in state law for
apprehensions by private persons.
- KY is considered the most unfriendly state (hostile) towards bounty hunters
in the country.

Mr. Harrell is there any way around this law in Kentucky so that I can work here?
- Thank you,
Mary
Kentucky expressly outlaws the commercial bail bond industry. Ky. Stat. § 431.510 (outlawing commercial bail bond industry); see Stephens v. Bonding Assoc. of Kentucky, 538 S.W.2d 580
(Ky 1976) (upholding statute). Bond agent from another state seeking to arrest fugitive who has fled to Kentucky must get a warrant. Ky. Rev. Stat. §440.270.

- Mary,
-
- I am unaware of any way to get around a state law that expressly outlaws this type of work in Kentucky.
-
- Furthermore, I will not advise others on how to circumvent the law.

Sorry I wasn't wanting to break the law, was looking for a legal loophole I guess.
Ok another question, if I take your course and get certified to work legally, even though I live in KY would I be allowed to work surrounding states?
Can see being out the expense of training if I will not be allowed to work.
- Thanks,
Mary

Kentucky is a tough state to work from:
-Illinois has the same laws as KY,
-MO recently enacted some really tough licensing laws (200 hours of an initial training course),
-In IN you must be a state resident for 6 months prior to obtaining a license,
-OH requires that you have your PI license to work in the state,
-TN is pretty easy (no license per se, but you must give your clients a copy of a background check and evidence of 8 hours of continuing education),
-WV requires a license but by law you can only work ONE case at a time (that's pretty funny),
-VA does not currently require a license.
The reality is that this may not be the right thing for you, I wouldn't spend my money on bail enforcement training if you will have a difficult time recouping your costs..
